UNMISS GHANBATT 5 HOSTS IDPS TO CHRISTMAS PARTY AT LEER TOB IN SOUTH SUDAN
Over the past few weeks, the whole world has been in a relatively joyous mood with the coming of the New Year and the feeling in South Sudan has not been anything different. UNMISS GH 5’s Delta Company currently deployed in Leer,Unity State, even with the existing conflict, managed to organise a feast for the internally displaced persons.
The company has been conducting operations within the general area of Leer under the UNMISS mandate for the past 10 months. As part of their tasks, they provide protection to the Temporary Protection Area that hosts and accounts for some 1200 IDPs from across Leer county and beyond.
During the festive season, the Officer Commanding Delta Company, Major Benjamin Adjei, organized a Christmas party on 26th Dec 17 which was attended by over 600 Children including some teachers and guardians. The Children were treated to some good music and performances by the Delta Choir, Leer Presbyterian and Catholic Youth Choirs. The children also had the opportunity to participate in some games among other competitions.
In his own words, The Officer commanding Delta Company indicated that the aim of bringing the children together was to offer an opportunity for his troops to interact with the children and also give them some pieces of advice and encouragement. To let the average child understand the mandate of the UN soldier and that the UN is neutral, impartial and aimed at helping the innocent ones. He implored the children to take their education seriously and to also be each other’s keeper.
To climax the event, some children who excelled in various competitions were presented with souvenirs as an award.
