Superb Messi hat-trick sees off Betis

0

Lionel Messi scored a hat-trick of the highest quality as Barcelona avenged their defeat by Real Betis earlier in the season to move 10 points clear at the top of La Liga.

His first was a 20-yard free-kick before he converted Luis Suarez’s backheel pass with a toe-poked strike.

The pick of the bunch was a clipped finish that went in off the bar.

Suarez scored a fine individual effort while Loren Moron grabbed Betis’ only goal with a superb finish.

Of Messi’s 33 hat-tricks in La Liga, this surely ranks as one of his finest.

After a cagey first 18 minutes, the 31-year-old broke the deadlock when his superb free-kick found keeper Pau Lopez’s top-right corner.

Barca and Messi then punished their hosts, who beat them 4-3 at the Nou Camp in November, with a lightning-quick move. Suarez found his forward partner with a backheeled through-ball, that beat three Betis players, which was then turned in by the Argentine.

It was 3-0 after the break when Suarez, who missed two earlier chances, drove forward from 25 yards out before slotting past Lopez.

Substitute Loren pulled a goal back with a sidefoot strike past the reach of goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, before Messi completed his hat-trick with a stunning effort that had the home support rise to their feet and applaud.

Barcelona now have 66 points from 28 games. They are 10 ahead of Atletico Madrid, with Real Madrid third with 54 points.

Over 100 people dead, 200 missing as cyclone hits Mozambique and Zimbabwe

0

No fewer than 100 people have died and many more are missing in Mozambique and neighbouring Zimbabwe on Sunday after tropical cyclone Idai barrelled across the southern African nations with flash floods and ferocious winds.

Authorities in Zimbabwe said the toll there had risen to 65 in the east of the country, while Mozambique said 48 people were killed in affected central areas, after the cyclone tore across the region on Friday and Saturday.

A member of parliament for Zimbabwe’s Chimanimani district the worst hit part of the country gave the updated toll and added that scores remain missing, after houses and bridges were washed away by flash floods when the storm slammed the area.

The most affected areas are not yet accessible, while high winds and dense clouds have hampered military rescue helicopter flights.

“So far we looking at 65 people that have lost their lives. We are looking at probably 150 to 200 people missing,” Joshua Sacco, lawmaker for Chimanimani, told AFP by phone.

The majority of those unaccounted for are thought to be government workers, whose housing complex was completely engulfed by raging waters. Their fate is currently unknown because the area is still unreachable.

“We are very worried because all these houses were just suddenly submerged under water and literally washed away and that is where we have about 147 missing. It’s very sad and the situation is dire” he said.

Two pupils at a secondary school were among those killed, after a landslide sent a boulder crashing into their dormitory, the country’s Department of Civil Protection (DCP) said.

Gunmen attack Mali army base, kill at least 16 soldiers

0

Gunmen attacked and briefly seized a Malian army base overnight, killing at least 16 soldiers and destroying five vehicles in central Mali’s Mopti region, two local councillors in the area where the attack happened said on Sunday.

The base is in the village of Dioura, the mayor of the nearest town Kareri, Youssouf Coulibaly, told Reuters by telephone from inside it. Central Mali has in the past few years been overrun by jihadists with links to al Qaeda.

“I’m currently inside the base and there were many deaths here. We’ve counted 16 so far,” he said. Army spokesman Colonel Diarran Kone confirmed the attack but gave no further details.

Violence by jihadist groups has worsened almost every year since it first exploded in Mali in 2012, when Islamists and allied Tuareg rebels took over the north and advanced towards the capital Bamako, until a French-led intervention pushed them back the following year.

Groups linked to al Qaeda and Islamic State used central and northern Mali as a launch pad for growing numbers of attacks across the Sahel region, especially on neighbours Niger and Burkina Faso, despite the presence of 4,500 French troops.

Central Mali is the locus of the Macina Liberation Front, led by Salafist preacher and militant leader Amadou Koufa. French Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly claimed in November that Koufa had been killed in a raid by French forces.

But at the end of last month Koufa appeared in a new propaganda video mocking French and Malian forces.

Arsenal to miss out as Monchi returns ‘home’ to Sevilla

0

The 50-year-old had been linked to the Gunners and Paris Saint-Germain, but opted to return to his former club in the wake of his departure from Roma
Sevilla have confirmed that Monchi has returned to the club to take up the role of director of football.

The Liga club confirmed the news on Sunday, indicating that he will take up the role following his departure from the same role at Serie A club Roma last week.

After spending his entire playing career with Sevilla, Monchi spent 11 years as their sporting director and discovered a host of star players, earning a massive profit from subsequent sales.

But the 50-year-old was unable to replicate his success in Italy, having spent just two years in the capital.

Shortly after Eusebio Di Francesco was sacked, Monchi departed Roma and was linked with a move to Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain.

However, a return to his former club quickly became likely as Sevilla made contact this week in the wake of coach Pablo Machin’s dismissal.

President Jose Castro revealed on Saturday that Sevilla were confident of bringing him back to the role he departed two years ago, telling reporters: “We think Monchi is the best. We have contacted him already and he has been very receptive. We have to agree on an idea of ??the future and both parties are optimistic.”

Monchi himself seemed to hint at a possible return, too, tweeting an image which said: “The heart never forgets the place where it left its best beats”, with the former goalkeeper adding, “Just this…which at the same time is a lot” in the caption.

And the Spanish side have now confirmed that the deal has gone through, announcing the deal on Sunday.

Monchi has replaced Joaquin Caparros in his role as sporting director, as the latter has returned to the bench to coach the first-team after Machin was let go.

Caparros was in charge of Sevilla when Monchi first joined the background staff following his retirement in 1999.

Zidane promises key role for exiled Real Madrid stars

0

The recalled stars came up with the goods as the French coach’s return to the helm started with a win against Celta Vigo.

Zinedine Zidane reiterated that his Real Madrid squad have a clean slate as his second reign as head coach began with a 2-0 La Liga win over Celta Vigo.

Isco and Gareth Bale celebrated their recalls to the starting line-up with second-half goals, while Keylor Navas and Marcelo returned from exile to impress.

Navas has been second choice for most of this season following Belgium goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois’ arrival from Chelsea, while Sergio Reguilon had condemned a seemingly disinterested Marcelo to the bench towards the end of Santiago Solari’s ill-fated tenure.

“Nobody here, or anywhere, can take away what these players have done here. I have a squad of 23, 24, 25 players and will count on them all,” said Zidane, who won three consecutive Champions Leagues with the bulk of his current squad before standing down at the end of last season.

“Thibaut and Reguilon have done well until now, others too. But at the same time Keylor is very good, Marcelo too, Isco too. I must count on these players, as they are good players, but I will count on them all.

“I just know the players they are, they have shown it before here. I am going to count on them. They showed that today, those who had played less – Keylor, Marcelo, Isco, Marco [Asensio] – all of them.”

An atmosphere of positive encouragement to welcome their returning hero marked a welcome change at the Santiago Bernabeu to recent games and Zidane felt his team grew into the contest against their relegation-threatened visitors.

‘I was told to join a cult to get political position’ – Taribo West

0

Former Super Eagles defender, Taribo West in a recent interview with Punch spoke about the plight of Nigeria’s ex-footballers and the struggle they face in the society.

He also revealed that he was asked to join a secret cult in other to get a political appointment but he refused.

See exercpts from the interview below….

There’s a general belief that sportsmen and women lack educational qualifications, thus they are excluded from sports administration. Do you agree?

That’s total rubbish; nonsense. How educated are those in FIFA? In Nigeria, is it every politician that went to school? Some can’t even write their names. But it’s only in my country that those in positions use demonic criteria to keep people away. In other countries, if you are competent for the job, they will give it to you. We’ve got lots of ex-footballers who are graduates, lawyers, doctorate degree holders these days. Where are they? Some are doing very well in their various fields. I have been involved in the political system and things like this discouraged me from it. If it means I have to be a cultist to get a position, I’m not ready for that. I’ll prefer to drink my garri at home and be free with God.

At the time I was in politics, a running mate to a governorship aspirant in my state (Rivers), brought me money and told me to join their cult. He told me if I wanted power, they would give me position, and that if I wanted money, I would be given. But he insisted that I must be involved in their cultism activities. So, I disassociated myself from them. From that day, I made up my mind that I will drink my garri, rather than become a cultist. Like I said earlier, I’ve met politicians who can’t speak good English but because they have godfathers and belong to various cults, they’ve been empowered. It’s total rubbish. I’m not afraid to say what needs to be said.

Is this the reason why you are not in Rivers to help discover and groom young footballers for the state?

I’ve made myself available for Rivers State for so many years. But if you are not their member, they won’t give you anything to do; they won’t involve you. You have to belong to a caucus, it’s at all levels. I have personal experiences, so I know. Nobody will look at you if you are not involved. They know that someone like me will disturb their activities, so they won’t get me involved. I’m the only big name in sports in my state that they don’t call for anything. So, it’s painful but hopefully, someday this will end.
